Dr. Jerel P. Calzo is an Associate Professor in the SDSU Graduate School of Public
Health. He received his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from University of Michigan
in 2010. Professor Calzo's research centers on the development of gender and sexual
orientation health disparities in adolescence and young adulthood. His work is organized
around two major lines of research. His first line of research focuses on the development
and consequences of appearance and performance-motivated concerns and behaviors in
boys and men, and how these may vary by sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic
position. His second line of research focuses on using community-based participatory
research approaches to develop school and community-based programs to support the
health and positive youth development of gender and sexual minority adolescents and
young adults.
